Description
Join us on an exclusive member trip to the magical Saltee Islands! At 11am on Saturday the 11th of May, we have reserved two boats to take us from Kilmore Quay to the Great Saltee Island. This island is a site of incredible natural heritage, and we are hoping to spot plenty of puffins, gannets, razorbills, oystercatchers, guillemots and more during our three and a half hours spent on the Saltees.
The island is one of my favourite places, it’s truly beautiful and a haven for seabirds. The terrain of the island is fairly uneven and rocky in parts, with occasional uphill sections but it is reasonably easy going overall, and not overly strenuous. However, you will need to be aware that there is no pier on the island, and we will be landing on the island by transfer from the larger boat to a dinghy, and then onto the shore. Seaweed and stones on the landing area may be slippery, and you may have to walk in shallow water and across slippery seaweed. This could present difficulties for anybody who has mobility or balance issues. There are no facilities at all on the island, and do be well prepared for the changing weather conditions, as there is no shelter!
The price for the Saltee Island Ferry is €30 per person, but as a member of Tuatha we are asking for a contribution of just €15 per person to go towards the boat fee. As with all our Tuatha tours, members are welcome to reserve a second spot for a non-member to accompany them. However, given the very limited space available on the boats, we ask that you do not purchase more than two tickets, to allow as many members as possible to join us. Please note that for insurance reasons only those aged over 18 will be allowed to join the tour. As this is an important nature reserve, I’m afraid dogs are strictly forbidden.
Kilmore Quay is accessible by public transport, as it is right beside the stop for the Wexford Bus Route 390.
