The great passage tomb of Newgrange in the Boyne Valley of County Meath, is one of Ireland’s most iconic monuments. It is a centrepiece of the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site, and it is a truly fascinating place, whose story is still being written today with a number of recent research projects.
Join myself and Professor Muiris O’Sullivan as we visit Newgrange. Muiris is one of Ireland’s leading experts on passage tombs and megalithic art, so he is the perfect guide to lead us on a journey of more than five millennia.
We’ll explore the newly updated Brú na Bóinne visitor centre that Muiris helped to create, before we enter the monument where we’ll hear about its construction and the remarkable phenomenon of the Winter Solstice alignment.
PLEASE NOTE
As entry fees apply on top of the usual costs associated with our trips, we ask for a contribution of €8 per person to help to cover the cost of facilitating this tour.
Due to the nature of the tour, there is a tight capacity of 24 places. To allow as many members as possible to enjoy this experience, please note that only one ticket may be purchased per member. We will have other tours this year where guests would be warmly welcome.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When and Where to Meet
We will meet at the entrance to the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at 10.30am, with the tour starting at 11am sharp. There is a short walk from the carpark to the centre, so it is better to give yourself plenty of time.
The Eircode for the centre is A92 EH5C, and here is a link to Google Maps.
Please ensure you go to the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre and do not put Newgrange into Google Maps, there is no access to the site except by going through the centre.
Is there a fee?
Yes, on this occasion we ask for a contribution of €8 to help cover the costs of entry fees etc.
Can I get a refund if I need to cancel?
Yes you can have a full refund, provided you cancel at least 7 days prior to the event (so by the 7th February). This would allow me to find someone to fill the place. You can still cancel after that date, but it won’t be possible to refund your entry fee.
What sort of things do we need to bring?
There are good facilities (including bathrooms, café and gift shop) in the Visitor Centre. The tour will be at least partially outdoors, so good waterproofs are always recommended.
How accessible is this tour for people with mobility problems?
While the visitor centre itself is fully accessible (with accessible bathrooms etc), the interior of Newgrange is a tight space, and not wheelchair accessible. There won’t be too much walking involved, though there are short walks from the carpark to the centre and from the centre to where we’ll catch the bus to the site itself.
Can I bring a friend or partner?
Unfortunately not this time. The tour is very limited in capacity. There are other events planned that guests will be very welcome to join us at.
How long will the tour take?
We should be finished with the tour by around 1.30pm–2pm.
Is it possible to get there by Public Transport?
The Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre is served by Route 163 from Drogheda Station. According to the timetable, the only viable bus would get you in to the Centre at 9.15am, when the centre will likely still be closed. For a timetable please see here.
